Today’s lesson on the TX DPS new driver log was backwards driving. They allotted an entire 30 minutes for this (you are also supposed to do it for 30 minutes at night). We spent an hour doing it, and will spend more time on it in the future.
We found a parking lot that had fire zone lines painted on it, and we practiced driving backwards and tracking parallel to the line, both on the right side and the left. I also had my son drive the Odyssey, which has bigger mirrors, better visibility, and no backup camera. We’re going to learn to do this old school before we add the camera. We also did it entirely by the mirrors; no turning and looking out the back window.
It took a while to get the hang of “backwards” steering, but I want my son to be as comfortable as possible backing up and using the mirrors. Ultimately, driving backwards is no different than driving forwards, and the wheel movements should be equally natural. If you have to think about which way to turn the wheel, you’re toast.

Good on you for instructing him in the lost art of backing up. There is a tree that protrudes into my long driveway that has claimed many an inattentive driver backing up.

Liking this! While I enjoy and use the camera on my Outback, I’m perfectly comfortable using mirrors, if needed - 5 years of driving a semi will do that...

Good stuff. See if you can beat my record of reversing for a kilometre and a half in one go before he notices it’s not in the curriculum.

Good parenting.

Now go rent a long trailer from u-haul and have him practice backing a trailer. Then add some cones to the mix....
I started this with my lawn tractor. The tractor doesn’t have mirrors and the trailer is really, really short, making it quite difficult to back in a straight line. As they say, if you can dodge a wrench....

I want him to understand that the backup camera is there for assistance only. My brother drove a school bus for many years, and he taught me how to back up using my mirrors only. It’s a great skill to have. My son kept looking out the front window while he was backing up. I said, “Why are you looking forwards ? You’re going backwards.”

In my line of work, it’s all about consistency.

I find myself feeling uncomfortable trying to use a backup camera/hearing the sensor beep when backing up. The lines on the camera and the beeping when you get close to something make me anxious. I’ve said on multiple occasions “I know I’m close to something now shut up. ” Unfortunately, they are not voice controlled.
